This family had a beautiful home, but they desired a backyard space that would encourage their kids to spend more time outdoors and provide a year-round retreat for the entire family. Their goal was to create a play area for the children and a relaxing outdoor living space for everyone to enjoy.

Creating an epic outdoor living area in the Pacific Northwest has many challenges. We are constantly dealing with geotechnical, salt water, weather-related issues that affect the materials, aesthetic, and design of our custom outdoor projects. We weather through a significant amount of rain that hinder many from even dreaming about what an outdoor living space could be in the PNW.

This homeowner's decision to stay in the Pacific Northwest was driven by their deep appreciation for the region's natural beauty. To enhance their enjoyment of their home year-round, they invested in creating a luxurious outdoor living space.

Phase 1 - Deck and Patio Cover:

In Bothell’s lush and often rainy climate, we wanted to ensure our outdoor space was both beautiful and built to last. We started by removing the old deck and pouring larger, reinforced footings to structurally support the weight of the new deck and full patio cover. With the addition of a cozy outdoor fireplace and a fully equipped kitchen, a solid foundation was essential. The design also features a side staircase that seamlessly connects to the future landscaping planned for phase two, enhancing the natural flow of the backyard.

To maximize the use of the space year-round, we partnered with Undercover Systems PNW to install their patented, award-winning under-deck system. This not only keeps the area below dry but also transforms it into a comfortable extension of the home. With the expanded deck and covered patio, the home's outdoor living space has more than doubled—perfect for enjoying Bothell’s fresh air, rain or shine.

Phase 2 - Landscaping & Spa Retreat:

Before we could put the final touches on the new deck and patio cover, we had to shift our focus to the next phase of this transformation. Turning this vision into reality meant moving a lot of earth—digging, grading, and preparing the foundation for what would become a stunning outdoor retreat. Embracing the natural slope of the property, we designed a multi-level spa-like oasis, featuring an exposed swim spa, a beautifully crafted sauna, a cold plunge, and a relaxing hot tub, all thoughtfully integrated into the landscape.

With so much earth moved, ensuring stability was a top priority. To prevent any shifting and to create a lasting, polished look, we constructed elegant retaining walls that frame each tier of the design. Built to withstand the Pacific Northwest’s elements, these walls ensure that this retreat will remain a peaceful and enduring sanctuary for years to come.

The backyard's design evokes the feeling of a high-end hotel, offering a variety of spaces and activities for everyone, from covered areas for protection from the elements to a hot tub/pool, and cold plunge. The spacious layout allows for various activities, and the outdoor kitchen makes entertaining guests a breeze.
